As one of the richest, most exciting destinations for family travel, Europe has a lot to offer to everyone in your family. The key to planning an enjoyable journey is to consider the needs and interests of every family member, not just the adults.

Research Your Destinations

Once you have chosen your destination countries, take the time to find out what is available there; this should include more than just the obvious, most popular sights. Find out about museums, theaters, zoos, and parks, keeping in mind each person who will be involved in your family travel. Europe is only exciting and fun for each individual if their own interests are tapped into.

Choose Your Hotel Carefully

A luxurious hotel with a spa and a gourmet restaurant may be a wonderful get away for a honeymoon or a romantic anniversary, but is not necessarily appropriate for family travel. Europe is rife with hotels and resorts that cater to families as well as couples. If you are traveling with children, you will want to ensure that there are restaurants that will appeal to everyone convenient to the hotel. You may also want to look for a hotel with a swimming pool, a game room, or other amenities and activities that will appeal to everyone.

Plan Your Agenda Realistically

As a student traveler backpacking through Europe, you may pack your days so you do not miss a thing. When planning family travel, Europe must be taken at a slower pace. The temptation will be to cram as much as you can into each day, but if especially if your children are younger, you will only be setting yourself up for disaster. Consider the schedules your family keeps at home, and try to plan your activities with a similar cadence. If your children still have nap times, you may want to schedule events and activities in the mornings and evenings, with long lunchtimes back in the room. Older children may be able to stay very active all day but will do better if they get to bed or at least are resting early in the evening.

Health And Safety

Be sure that you are prepared with necessary medications before leaving home, but when you arrive, you will want to become aware of the location of local hospitals, pharmacies, and other medical facilities in case of emergency. Make your older children aware of the dangers of theft and the importance of sticking together, and make a plan in the event you are separated. Being prepared, relaxed, and flexible will lead to successful family travel; Europe is a great place to explore with this in mind.
